Since 1991 major employers such as Volkswagon Canada, AEG Bayly Engineering, DuPont, Ajax Textile and Paintplas have come in and increased employment rates dramatically.

The economy in Ajax Ontario has greatly improved since the recession of the early 1980s. Since that time, residential development in Ajax has increased, as well as shopping, retail and commercial space. There are residential developments going up throughout the town as well as mini-malls, boutiques, restaurants and many other commercial and retail ventures. Amid all of this development the prices are being maintained as affordable and despite all the developing the housing market in Ajax is still very much a buyers' market.

Ajax has an exemplary school system as well. There are two Catholic high schools and three public schools. The town is also home to two minor league teams. For minor league baseball they have the Ajax Spartans and for minor league hockey they have the Ajax Knights.

Ajax has merged with Scarborough to form the state of the art health system of Rouge Valley Health System as well as merged with Pickering to form the Durham Regional Police Department. These mergers provide the best of care and response to the residents of both towns while keeping tax dollars and costs to the citizens lower. Firefighting services are provided by three different fire stations from around the area to the citizens of Ajax.
